Polmanteer Residence

Madison County, Kentucky 2002
The horse country of Madison County, Kentucky, provides the inspiring views for this house and its numerous out buildings.

The main building is patterned after the folk house known as saddlebag. The colonnade that connects the garage, guest house and dining pavilion is a simple spine along which small volumes attach themselves. This aggregation of small buildings invites the making of garden spaces between one and the other.

The little village of buildings arranges itself on a line projected west from a large oak tree that terminates the colonnade. And from that contrived position I hope the group will settle into the slope of the pasture and soon will be as original as the landscape itself.
