One promise of the modern dream, to end the confinement
and darkness of the 19th century house, is always present
in the New Native. Plan and section can be shaped freely,
metaphor and symbols can enter, and the devices of the 20th century can be woven into the composition. Plate glass, layering
of spaces, daylight-as-notation, cantilevers, floated objects and painterly surfaces are all available to each scheme as I move it through its stages of incubation.

The spirit of modern architecture for me remains the liberation of
the dark, gray building of times past into the free play of the lonely painter, or the hopeful musician, or the eternal child. The New Native house embraces this potential without becoming a laboratory or proving ground. The life of the occupant can be enhanced by these possibilities, and then the house can flower. I have found no need
to make spaces that are only ideological; but the flow of sunlit rooms, from inside the heart of house to the landscape outside,
is irresistible, even to the most conservative client.

The international stance is available to all of us wherever we
turn (automobiles, Internet, fashion, electronics, cinema, etc.)
The New Native house attempts a deep embodiment of these challenges, appearing in the building as a metropolitan spirit
that I hope is whispering, “the clean edge,” or “the shadows in glass,” or “the intrigue of an urban evening”.

It is these tantalizing images that the modernist vision has given us. This bold, new reality becomes the other partner, along with the vernacular, that joins energy to generate the New Native dwelling.
