Since World War II, technology has steadily degraded the quality and beauty of the materials used in residential construction. Earnest salesmen extol the benefits of these new materials: they cost less, they are lighter, they never wear out, etc.

Lower cost allows builders to increase their profits. And so, solid wood doors have been replaced by pressed cellulose doors, hardwood floors have given way to cheap broadloom carpet, and assemblies have grown thinner and thinner.

The cumulative effect is a grim and flimsy finished product.

We have said no to these degradations. The New Native house uses a variety of solid, natural materials — stone, hardwoods, cedar, clay brick, copper, etc. These materials are vital to the rich presence of the New Native house. Granted, they are more expensive, but when the cost is factored into the entire project and the house’s extended life span is considered, these materials are easily afforded and are a wise investment.

“The simple juxtaposition of two well-chosen materials can often provide the inspiration for a house well-made and a life well-lived.”
